Plus: Tips to level up your strength training

Here’s the truth, Fam -

A lot of people can hustle once.

I want to know what you’re willing to do 10,000 times.

I’m talking 10,000 more intervals. 10,000 more burpees. 10,000 more moments where you choose the work over the excuse.

Legacies are built in the grind, not the glory.

So what are you committing to doing 10,000 of?

 .WHAT I’M APPLYING.

Turning mindset into muscle đź§  A new review in the Strength and Conditioning Journal looked at 27 studies on “psyching up” before max effort. In nearly two-thirds of those cases, athletes actually got stronger just by mentally firing themselves up before a lift. Cool, right?

Here’s how I’m applying these findings in my own training:

  1. Self-talk. Short, powerful cues work. Think: “Bury it.” “Explode up.” Keep them present tense, repeat them often in training, and make them automatic. I love “let’s fucking go” and “lightweight!”

  2. Visualize. RIGHT before your lift, see it, feel it, hear it. The bar on your back, your breath, the sound of plates. Live it in your mind before you move. Visualize within a minute of the lift.

  3. Do your thing. Your ritual—music, thigh slaps, deep breaths, mantras — aren’t silly. It’s science. Whatever gets you hyped, use it. For a deadlift this might look like saying out loud “LFG, Robin” (in the third person), a leg slap, deep exhale, and internally saying “leg press the floor away.”

  4. Don’t overthink. Getting too in your head (“brace abs, breathe, squeeze glutes”) or staying too calm during max lifts can actually reduce strength. Instead, focus on the action you want your body to take—like press the floor away in a deadlift.

The bottom line: Before your next heavy set, take 10 seconds to get mentally activated. Visualize, say your cue, and lock in. Your body will follow your mind.

 .WHAT I’M LISTENING TO.

Strength training for kids 🎧️ On this episode of Perform with Dr. Andy Galpin, we’re reminded that movement is medicine—and it starts early. Dr. Galpin explains how strength training helps kids build confidence and coordination while developing lifelong grit. He connects strength, focus, and self-belief in a way that shows how movement shapes both body and mind. When kids learn to move with joy, they grow into adults who move with purpose. Give it a listen if you’re raising or coaching the next generation of movers. ⬇️

Question: How do you prep to work out when you know you have a busy day ahead?

- Carlie

Answer: Remove every excuse between you and the door. When your schedule’s packed, preparation is your best training partner.

Lay everything out the night before—clothes, shoes, hydration, even your playlist. The fewer decisions you leave for later, the easier it is to show up and move with intention.
